A new ark for Denbighshire

A DENBIGHSHIRE project helping those affected by this year’s floods has its very own logo thanks to a local designer.

The Denbighshire Ark project is a collaborative programme offering specialist, guidance and support to those affected by the devastating floods in November 2012 affected more than 500 homes at St Asaph, Ruthin and Rhuddlan.

JoAnne Williamson from Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council said: “After the floods third sector organisations were under immense pressure to provide help, and some had a waiting list of over six weeks.

“We came up with the idea of bringing these organisations together, to work as one, and also put in a joint bid to the Big Lottery Fund.

“We were successful and received £141,500 in funding under the People and Places Project.”

After setting up, The Ark Project which consists of: the Denbighshire Voluntary Services Council, Denbighshire Care and Repair, Citizen’s Advice bureau, Benefit Advice Shop, Age Concern North Wales Central and Vale of Clwyd Mind; needed its own logo.

The group called upon Business Supporting Communities (B2C) a project funded by the Big Lottery and delivered by North Wales County Voluntary Councils; which works to help bring businesses and communities together; to see if they knew any graphic designers willing to volunteer their time and skills.

“We already had a designer – Catrin Roberts enrolled on our Professional Initiative,” said Lucy Kew, B2C’s project officer for Denbighshire and Conwy.

“Catrin contacted B2C saying she wanted to volunteer, so she was the perfect choice.”

Catrin of Sophisticat Design, worked with the group members throughout the design process, from brainstorming, to whittling the designs down from six to two and finally the finished product.

“I originally worked with B2C on their logo re design and decided to help them out and offer one of their groups a logo design for free,” said Catrin.

“It was a bit of a tricky brief as it had to include all the different organisations involved in the Ark project. Sometimes a design like this can get very complicated, they were happy with the outcome.”

JoAnne added: “We are very happy with the finished logo, we wanted something that would make the public take one look and know that we are here to help those affected by the floods – this logo does just that.”

Lucy added: “It is great that we have been able to bring Catrin and the Denbighshire Ark Project together.
