B2C shares accounting advice

Tax, gift aid and VAT were the talk of the day at a workshop hosted by Business Supporting Communities (B2C).

Community groups and volunteers in Gwynedd were able to boost their knowledge on a range of accounting subjects in the workshop led by accountants Gwyn Thomas and Co as part of the Big Lottery funded B2C project.

Run in conjunction with Mantell Gwynedd, the well-attended workshop was held at Porthmadog’s famous Royal Sportsman Hotel who shared their facility through the B2C Share initiative.

The event was an informal opportunity for community groups and voluntary organisations to ask a qualified accountant questions they may have, including tax, VAT, gift aid and funding.

Gwyn Thomas, who led the workshop, said: “It was a drop in session for local people who are involved in community projects to pick brains on various subjects, accounting, VAT, charity commissioners, all subjects relevant to what they do.

“It was a very informal session and the response seemed very positive.

“Those who attended asked relevant questions took plenty of notes and the hand outs we provided.

“Having had a business here for more than 20 years we like to give a little back and were delighted to assist at the workshop.”

Among the attendees was Roger Hughes, who represents Moelyci Farm and Environmental Centre in Tregarth nr Bangor, and works for the Golygfa Gwydyr Community Organisation in Llanrwst in the Conwy Valley.

“A lot of community organisations are experiencing funding cut backs and it is a time of change, so I thought it would be useful to go along to the workshop,” said Mr Hughes.

“I’m currently looking at a new business plan with Moelyci, whilst Golygfa Gwydyr are looking at pursuing charitable status.

“The workshop proved very useful.

“Often these things are more about networking but the information provided was very useful.

“It was also great to make contact with B2C and find out what they have to offer,” he added.
