A Denbigh businessmen who has personally benefitted from cancer research, has completed a 200-mile hike to raise more than £20,000 for a Mold-based charity.
Ian Gibson of Artisan Windows, Denbigh together with Peter Dutton of Dutton and Peters Builders, Mold, paramedic Wyn Jones and Wyn’s 74-year-old father Dai, took on the famous coast-to-coast walk for the North West Cancer Research Fund.
The four men battled the elements for 200 miles (192 miles plus a couple of ‘detours’) in what was one of the coldest and wettest months of May in years.
Ian said: “I’d like to thank everybody for their on-going support, be it in person, or with kind donations. Between myself, Wyn Jones, Dai Jones, Peter Dutton, Fiona Seddon, Gyspy and Ben, we have so far raised £20,000 for the Mold branch of North West Cancer Research Fund.
“We hope to continue raising awareness – and money – in its 60th year. Although the weather was inclement to say the least, it was an incredible experience.”
Peter, Ian and Wyn have all had their lives touched by cancer. While Peter and Ian have lived with the disease, Wyn’s wife Judith sadly lost her battle with cancer in November 2011.
Judith was a dedicated fund-raiser for the Mold branch of NWCRF, which sponsors cancer research in Bangor, Lancaster and Liverpool universities. The group took on the walk from St Bees, Cumbria, to Robin Hood’s Bay, North Yorkshire, in her memory and to help the Mold committee of the charity in its mission to raise £60,000 to mark its 60th year.
Peter said: “It was a fantastic experience made better by all the support we had along the way and the knowledge we were raising so much money for such a worthy cause.”
Anne Jackson, chief executive of the NWCRF said: “Judith was a valuable member if the Mold committee and we can’t thank Ian, Peter, Wyn and Dai enough for their incredible contribution. Research funded by the charity is vital in finding a cure for cancer that affects one in three of us. We are incredibly grateful to the team for their support as almost all of our funds are raised through voluntary means.”
