Magden sets course for growth

Leading building products distributor Magden is welcoming a new managing director to the helm as it sets course for a new period of growth.

The north of England company has grown from a one-branch Manchester operation to having four distribution centres supplying customers as far afield as Scotland and Gloucester.

After 30 years in sole charge, Magden’s founders Alan and Mary Robinson have sold a majority shareholding in the company to Nick Friend and his associates.

Nick, who has with a wealth of experience in growing businesses in the distribution and trade sectors, will take on the role of managing director.

“I am thrilled to be joining the team here at Magden, and very proud to be associated with such a well-regarded business,” said Nick. “I am eager to build on Magden’s successful history and its reputation for outstanding customer service.”

Former divisional sales manager of Specialist Building Products Ltd, Laurence Hicks will work alongside Nick taking up the post of commercial manager. Laurence, who has a strong network of contacts in the cellular building products industry, is no stranger to Magden.

He explained: “I have been working with Magden for many years so I understand the business and the high standards its customers expect. I’m very proud to be working in a company I have admired for such a long time.”

While there are changes at the top, founders Alan and Mary Robinson will retain active roles in the company. Having expanded the business to include branches in Manchester, Cleckheaton, Rotterdam, and Birtley, with 16 delivery vans and clients across the UK, the pair said they will continue to focus on customer service.

“Mary and I retain shares in Magden and will continue as directors,” Alan said. “We will remain active in the business, ensuring that Magden’s commitment to customer service remains as strong as ever.”
