Welsh ale crowned champion mild at the Great British Beer Festival

A North Wales ale has been named the best Mild in the UK, at this year’s Champion Beer of Britain competition in London.

Great Orme Brewery’s Welsh Black scooped the prestigious award earlier this month.

It came just weeks after the Glan Conwy based brewery’s Celtica won two gold stars for its Celtic ale in this year’s Guild of Fine Foods Great Taste Awards.

The brewery beat off stiff competition from both small microbrewers and large regional and national brewers to win gold in the mild category at this year’s Great British Beer Festival.

After a year of local tasting panels and regional heats leading up to the finals, CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale announced the brewery’s win with its smooth black ale – Welsh Black.

“We are over the moon” said brewery owner Jonathan Hughes.

“We are very proud of our Welsh Black which won best mild in Wales last year and has now scooped the award for the whole of the UK beating off some very reputable names in the industry.

“This has been a very successful year for Great Orme, and we hope to continue bringing in the awards and putting North Wales on the map.”

This black ale owes its characteristics to the large amount of chocolate malt giving it a velvety smooth rich coffee finish.
No aroma hops are added to this beer, instead many types of grain are used to develop the flavour.

Experience shows that this beer is enjoyed by anyone who likes their beer dark, be they mild, porter or stout drinkers.

The Great British Festival is a yearly event, offering visitors the chance to try more than 800 real ales, ciders, perries and other alcoholic drinks from the UK and beyond.
