Community investment brings big business rewards to SMEs

Larger companies often have well-publicised community investment programmes and for good reason, this type of corporate philanthropy can be great for business. However you don’t have to be a FTSE 100 company to reap the rewards of community investment.

Whether it’s lending a hand to improve a local park or gardens or simply recycling some unwanted goods or equipment, helping to improve your community can bring tangible business rewards.

Lucy Kew is project officer for Business Supporting Communities (B2C) a Big Lottery funded project from the North Wales County Voluntary Councils that helps small and medium sized businesses build links with the community.

She believes that smaller enterprises can reap substantial benefits, from forging stronger links with the community. She explains: “Supporting community groups and organisations in kind or financially offers a whole host of benefits for small and medium sized businesses (SMBs).

“It’s nothing new and thousands of SMBs around the UK volunteer time and resources every year. But, for those who want to give it a try for the first time, they have little to lose and a great deal to gain.

“Businesses that interact closely with their communities build stronger social networks, are more in tune with consumer needs and are more attractive to prospective employees and customers.

“Other benefits include cost effective personal development opportunities for employees, helping to increase staff retention levels as well as employee productivity.”

There are many opportunities with community projects across Wrexham and North Wales with projects like B2C there to help, advise and facilitate. For more information on B2C go to www.b2cwales.co.uk.
