Island ale proves a real hit

The Isle of Anglesey now has its own beer, thanks to the award-winning Great Orme brewery.

Ynys Mon is a rich, copper-coloured beer, reflecting the island’s mining heritage.

It’s the latest offering from the Glan Conwy based brewery and it’s proving very popular on both sides of the Menai Straits.

The first batch of the brew sold out in just five days with pub-goers across the region eager to sample it. According to brewer Jonathan Hughes, it complements Great Orme’s existing stable of traditionally brewed beers.

He said: “Anglesey doesn’t have its own brewery and, as it’s the Mother of Wales, we thought it should at least have its own beer.  It’s been very popular in pubs on the island but also across the region.

“Ynys Mon is a 4.5 per cent, copper-coloured beer which is about half way between our Orme and Merlin beers.”

Jonathan founded Great Orme Brewery on his family dairy farm in 2005, when farming operations were wound down.

The brewery, which prides itself on using natural ingredients and traditional brewing methods, is housed in a former cow shed, on a hillside overlooking the Conwy Estuary and the Great Orme, from which the brewery takes its name.

As well as a multi award-winning range of real ales, Jonathan produces the region’s only premium lager, 1085 Snowdon’s Lager. The lager is named after the height of Wales’ highest peak and the soft Snowdonia water that is the starting point for the popular beer.
