Suburbia Design and Communications shows its metal at the Royal Mint

Award-winning Suburbia Design and Communications has proved its metal working on an Olympic project to help the next generation be the best they can be.

The graphic design and publishing firm, with offices in Chester and North Wales, is spear-heading the creative work for a ground-breaking charity founded by Olympic gold medallist Dr David Hemery CBE.

The 21st Century Legacy, Be the Best You Can Be! Programme sees Olympians head into schools aiming to inspire, engage and empower students to achieve their dreams.

Suburbia created the design for the medallions that were struck by the Royal Mint to celebrate the achievement of young people participating in the project.

Thomas Gagen, lead creative at Suburbia travelled to the Royal Mint site in South Wales to see his medallion design minted.

He said: “Working with 21st Century Legacy and the Royal Mint has been a privilege for Suburbia. It was particularly rewarding to go to the Royal Mint to see the medallions being struck, and to meet some of the youngsters who have benefitted from this amazing project.”

The agency, headed by Thomas and partner Julie Wrench, was first approached by the charity to create a distinctive branding.

The logo and starburst Suburbia created for 21st Century Legacy, impressed the charity so much, it commissioned the agency to complete a number of creative projects including work books, magazines, leaflets, promotional materials and presentation packs for those taking part in the programme.

Seeing the design in metal was a first for the experienced, creative design company, who work on a number of well-known magazines, alongside creating logos, brochures and marketing materials.

Suburbia came up with the initial design for the medallion and a team at the Royal Mint translated that into a three dimensional model.

Thomas said: “From creating the initial starburst and branding, it was quite a moment for me to hold the medallion in my hands. I hope that the Be the Best You Can Be! Programme inspires young people to achieve their dreams, maybe it will even be the first medallion of achievement held by future David Hemerys.”

The 21st Century, Be the Best You Can Be! Programme has been developed to help young people discover the unique potential within themselves and to pursue and fulfill their dreams. The Royal Mint supported the charity to make the achievers medallions.

The project is the brainchild of Dr Hemery, who came up with the concept after being asked to help deliver a bid promise that the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games would be an inspiration to the youth of Britain and the rest of the world.

Schools taking part are visited by an Olympian, Paralympian or other high achiever. This is followed by themes integrated into the curriculum and a celebration event where children receive the medallions designed by Suburbia.
